What to Expect during Root Canal Treatment

The first step is a thorough exam with one of our dentists. They will take an x-ray to determine the extent of the infection, then discuss the procedure with you, explain what’s involved, and answer your questions.
Before we begin treatment, we will administer a strong local anesthetic to numb the area and ensure a pain-free experience. Need a little extra help to relax? We also offer nitrous oxide to help you remain calm throughout the procedure. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to let us know—we are here to help you.
Our dentist creates a small opening in the tooth to access the infected pulp. At Sutton Dentistry, we use advanced rotary endodontics to remove the infected tissue carefully and clean the root canals. We then fill the cleaned canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and seal them to prevent further infection.
It is common to experience some soreness in the area after the anesthesia wears off, and most patients find fast relief with over-the-counter pain relievers. The final step involves placing a final restoration, such as a filling or crown, to protect the treated tooth and restore its function and appearance.
Contrary to what you might believe, a root canal is not a difficult or painful procedure—it is designed to relieve pain caused by an infection deep within the tooth. Still, we understand that you may be nervous about the prospect, but you couldn’t be in better hands. Our supportive and caring dental team will do everything to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience.
