When you have a toothache, nothing else seems to matter. All you can think about is the throbbing pain, and in the back of your mind, you’re speculating about what’s going to happen when you get to the dentist’s office. Will they be able to save your tooth? What if you need an extraction? How will all of this affect your other teeth?
With so many questions swirling around in your head, you need a dental team that can put your mind at ease and work to save your tooth.
Fortunately, that’s what Dr. Sutton and his team have been doing for many years.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental treatment option designed to remove the infected pulp from inside your tooth. It’s a straightforward process that can eliminate the need for extraction if you have deep decay, have undergone numerous dental treatments on a particular tooth, or have experienced trauma.
These are the most common symptoms that could indicate you need a root canal:
- A severe toothache that doesn’t subside on its own
- Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, even when you remove the stimuli
- Tender or swollen gums, especially around a particular tooth
- Pain when you bite down or chew
- Pain when you touch your tooth
- Tooth discoloration or darkening
- A pimple or bump on your gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
The Procedure: What to Expect
- If you need a root canal, the first thing we’ll do is numb your mouth so you won’t feel anything. Once your mouth is numb, your toothache will be gone for good!
- Then, we’ll make a small hole in your tooth so we can remove the infected pulp and clean the area.
- We’ll fill the area with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material to keep your tooth from getting infected again.
- Usually, we’ll place a dental crown over the top of your tooth to protect and support it, giving the greatest stability.
